How do I know if I need a new furnace?
Furnaces are a key part of your home comfort system, and where maintained properly should last for quite some time. The majority of furnace warranties are around the 10 year mark and this is not by accident. If you furnace is more than 10 years old, you may want to consider having it replaced. If your furnace is over 15 years old, it could be on its final legs. Should I get a Furnace or a Heat Pump?
Heat pump technology is getting better with each year that passes. A heat pump works in the same way as an air conditioner, using refrigerant to move heat from one space (outside) to another. There are some benefits to a heat pump, however here are some thing you may want to consider when deciding between a heat pump or a furnace.

Heat pumps do not always perform well in very cold weather, as they are drawing heat from outside air, when we see temperatures below -20 degrees celsius, a heat pump may struggle to keep your space warm.

Heat pumps use electricity rather than natural gas which may have an impact on the amount of money it takes to heat a given space.

A furnace is designed to move a lot of air through your existing ducts, and in some circumstances, you may need to upgrade ductwork if you switched to a heat pump only.
Probably the best solution, and what we anticipate will be the norm going forward, is to have both a heat pump and gas furnace. The Heat Pump would keep you cool in the summer, warm on the cooler days and the furnace would act as a secondary or back up heating appliance for those really cold days.
